There’s a lot to be learned from online dating apps like Tinder, Coffee Meets Bagel, and Bumble. Believe it or not, these apps offer many valuable digital marketing lessons!

Here are three marketing lessons you can learn from online dating apps.

  1. Know your channel. When you dive into online dating, you need to know what type of channel you want to use. Flirt is geared towards hook-ups, while Coffee Meets Bagel is geared towards lasting relationships. It’s not uncommon for users to have profiles on multiple dating platforms, but you need to know which website or app to prioritize. The same goes for marketing with social media! Your target audience might have profiles on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram, but that doesn’t mean they’re actively engaged on all four sites. They may only briefly check two sites and spend more time posting and interacting on the other two sites. Know your audience, and know where they like to spend their time online.
  2. Personalize your message. If you have an active profile on an online dating app, your goal is probably to go on a date. But you probably won’t meet up with the person who sends a generic message like, “Hey, you’re beautiful, let’s go out on Saturday.” The same goes for digital marketing. Generic emails will get you nowhere. Your customers all have different and specific reasons for using your product or service. Personalize your message to target these reasons, and make it creative!
  3. Be a human, not a robot. Remember: You’re human. Would you go on a date with someone who overwhelmed you with a dozen messages about meeting up? Probably not. In fact, you’d probably think that person was annoying. The same principle is relevant to digital marketing. Don’t send out the same message repeatedly. Instead, try to deliver the right message at the right moment.

Bottom line:

Pick the right channel/platform for your customers, personalize your message, and don’t annoy your target audience. Following these tips doesn’t guarantee a perfect online date or digital marketing strategy, but they will get you a lot closer towards building a great relationship.
